Saskatoon Getaway In Your Lincoln

August 14th, 2020 by

This month we continue our Travel Sask Series with a weekend getaway to Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. We explore the best shopping, food, and activities to take part in.

Rise & Shine

Saskatoon is only two hours away, but you and your crew have quite the day ahead of you, so you will want to wake up early to ensure that you get there in time for prime Farmer’s Market hours. Stop by Drift Sidewalk Cafe once you arrive and opt for a flat white. The farmer’s market is open from 8 am-2 pm on Saturdays, so once you’re all fueled up on caffeine you’ll be ready to shop! Their farmer’s market, which has been around since 1965 hosts a number of vendors selling everything from produce and dairy products to baked goods, meats & fish, and more!

Make sure to check out Donna’s Country Kitchen for a fresh cinnamon bun, the perfect pairing with your morning coffee. Stop by Sollosy’s Honey to grab a fresh jar and Parenteau Bros Meadworks for Old World style honey fermented alcoholic beverages that you can bring back home! Aside from all the fresh food that the farmer’s market hosts, they have some really talented artisans as well. Cue Kathleen Hamilton Pottery, her handmade pottery including mugs, bowls, and more which make for lovely pieces to add to your home.

Afternoon Art

All that browsing and shopping will have made you work up a serious appetite for lunch. Luckily, we’ve got the perfect spot for you. Una Pizza + Wine is the perfect take on a California style pizza. This spot has so many tasty items it’s best to order a few shareable options. Go for the kale caesar and roasted brussels sprout to start, then try a  4-maggi  and a prosciutto pizza…because two is always better than one, right?! We promise you’ll leave feeling absolutely full and content.

You’ll be sparing no time, as your next stop is Remai Modern, a new museum that opened in 2017 dedicated to modern and contemporary art. With 11 gallery spaces and a number of remarkable views of the river, you may get lost in time for a few hours. There are always new & exciting exhibits to view and learn about. After having indulged in delicious food and captivating art, you’ll need to rest up to enjoy your big night ahead! We recommend staying at the Delta Bessborough to experience a little piece of history. The chateau-esque hotel overlooks the South Saskatchewan River and was originally designed for a division of the Canadian National Railway back in 1935. Nestled right in the heart of downtown, you’ll be just minutes away from the action!

Dinner & Drinks

You and your crew better be well rested because you have a real good night of food and drinks ahead of you. For dinner, you’re off to Stick and Stones, a Japanese/Korean restaurant and cocktail bar. Choose from their local beers and start off the night with steamed buns and rolls. We recommend the bulgogi buns and the spicy salmon roll as well as the TNT roll to start. These starters will just be a warm-up for what your taste buds are about to endure next! For mains, they have a variety of different ramen options as well as a number of main plates and bowls. Try the Spicy Ramen and be amazed at the mixes of flavours including Korean chilli, kimchi, pork belly, and more! Hunker down for something heartier with a bowl of bibimbap.

If you’re up for dessert, the kkwabaegi is a must-try. Twisted Korean doughnuts with cinnamon, walnuts, and chocolate sauce…need we say more? Pair your dessert with a nightcap, perhaps an old fashioned to signify the end of a pretty well perfect day.

Sunday FUNday

Yesterday’s long day of shopping and eating probably took a bit of a toll on you. AKA – you may need to fuel up on caffeine for the drive home. Pop into Honey Bun Cafe for a morning latte and scone. Just when you thought your trip was through, we have one last stop on your way out of town. Thrive Juice Co. has some seriously awesome juices that we think you need to try. Our recommendations are Know Your Roots, Garden Veggies, and Matcha Almond Milk. Plus, grab an LCG wellness shot with lemon, ginger, and cayenne to perk you up for the drive home!
