What is an Emissions Test?

Car emissions from exhaust pipe

Now more than ever before, vehicles are cleaner-driving and create less pollution in Moose Jaw and Estevan. In some places, vehicle emissions tests are required to ensure that only vehicles meeting specific emissions standards are able to get registered. While Saskatchewan doesn’t require emissions tests, you might still be wondering, “What is an emissions test?” It’s a check to ensure that your vehicle isn’t emitting too many pollutants like hydrocarbons, carbon monoxide, oxygen, and oxides of nitrogen, which are all found in vehicle exhaust.

While there’s no reason for you to ask, “Do I need an emissions test?” there are other checks and inspections your vehicle needs to be able to legally registered. The province requires a series of safety inspections that must be passed. If you drive a car that hasn’t passed the required inspections you could:

  • Lose your registration and insurance
  • Be unable to renew your registration until repairs are made

So while you don’t have to worry about how long an emissions test takes, or how much an emissions test costs, we can help you understand the ins and outs of our required safety inspections. Take a look at our guide to required province vehicle testing in Saskatchewan, and contact us if you have any questions. Do I Need an Emissions Test?

If you live in Swift Current, Regina, or anywhere else in Saskatchewan, you do not need to have an emissions test. You don’t need to worry about how long an emissions test takes or how much an emissions test costs.

What Vehicle Tests are Required in Saskatchewan?

Several types of vehicle tests are required in Saskatchewan in order to register a vehicle. Let’s take a look at the tests you should plan on scheduling:

Body Integrity Inspections

These tests are required if you buy a used vehicle outside of Saskatchewan, of if your vehicle has been declared a total loss. They verify the structural integrity of your vehicle. Bring the following with you to the inspection:

  • Cross-Canada VIN search from any SGI motor license issuer
  • Proof of ownership

Mechanical Safety Inspections

The vehicles that require body integrity inspections also require mechanical safety inspections. If your vehicle requires repairs, you will be alerted before any work is performed beyond the inspection. You also have the right to choose where you take your vehicle for any repairs.

When your vehicle has passed all its required inspections, you’ll be given certificates as proof. Bring them with you when you register your vehicle.

How Much is Safety Testing?

Prices can vary between inspection facilities. For body integrity inspections facilities can charge their usual labor rate. Many facilities usually charge their hourly labor rate. With mechanical safety inspections you can expect them to take around ninety minutes to complete.
